Five inspirational women in Grand Final face-off after three-month business transformation project

A group of five Sydney female entrepreneurs will next week complete a three-month journey in a competition that that will see two of them walk away with a $4,000 business transformation prize.

But in this unique competition, there are no losers.

All finalists have been through three months of workshops and coaching to prepare them for the Inspiring Business Growth project grand final being hosted by Blacktown City Council on Friday 31 May.

Deputy Mayor of Blacktown, Mr Tony Bleasdale (pictured at right), will officially launch the event at Blacktown Civic Centre. It will run from 9.30am – 2pm.

The five finalists are:

  1. Jennie Thompson – Founder & Director – The Cooks Workshop, Dural.

  2. Judith Viado – Co-founder – Nutricraft, Quakers Hill. (Cookware).

  3. Gabriella Kovacevic – Founder & Director – Gabriella Kovac, Drummoyne. (author & coach).

  4. Molly Zhao – Founder & Director – Mars Studio, North Ryde.

  5. Eleen Yaw – Founder – Yin Latte Yoga, Dural.

The project is an initiative of the Western Sydney based Alpha International Marketing & Management (AlphaIMM) agency supported by Sydney businesses, government agencies and local government.

Local Area Marketing is proud to be a sponsor of the event and of being able to have helped candidates with their preparation.

To qualify, entrants must have been running their businesses for a minimum two-years and have the desire to expand, but lack the knowledge or resources to do so.

Finalists began their three-month journey in March following an intensive first round day-long coaching session on business pitching, public speaking, confidence dressing and brand awareness. At day's end, they faced a judging panel for a 60-second business pitching challenge using their newly acquired skills to qualify.

But things will be different in next week’s Grand Final. Finalists will have 10 minutes each to “sell” their newly created business and branding plans to a panel of judges in front of the public.

Audience members will also have the opportunity of being the first collaborators to engage with the finalists as they implement their expansion plans.

AlphaIMM Founder and Director Dr Theresa Teo (pictured below), said her vision is to support women entrepreneurs to take that “next step” with a support structure to boost their skills, business knowledge and confidence.

“Women often have dual roles with home and family and want to build a business but can’t always take advantage of regular workshops or networking groups,” she said.

“We combined all the essentials they would need into two rounds of workshop and three consultations with business specialists, mentors, networking and media support over a three-month journey.

“Specialist business collaborators experienced in key disciplines ensured we covered everything our participants needed to support them on their journey.”

Dr Teo said workshops and mentoring sessions covered public speaking, branding, dressing, elevator and writing pitches, business and marketing plans, budgeting, social media, financial management, human resources, law, websites and business expansion tips.

“To sweeten the journey, our collaborators will collectively provide $4,000 service packages for the two grand final winners to support them with the next phase of their business journey,” she said.

“This will include brand management and a six-month mentorship.

“It’s been a wonderful journey for all of us and I am excited and humbled at the results we have achieved, the support we have received and the extent of the changes I have seen with these amazing women,” Dr Teo said.

Grand final judges are: Denise Heath, CEO of Nepean Area Disabilities Organisation (NADO); Peter Groeneveld, Founder, Computer Network Integration; Macy Lee, Marketing Manager, Elsevier Australia and Rosemary Anner, Founder, Parramatta Web Design.
